Brought up in Perth, Michael Chaney’s career speaks for itself. Over 20 years at Wesfarmers where he was Managing Director for 13, a Director of BHP for 10 years, Chair of the National Australia Bank Board of Directors for 10 years, Chair of the Woodside Petroleum Board of Directors for some 11 years, Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, President of the Business Council of Australia, re-joining the Wesfarmers Board of Directors in 2015 as Chair, a position he still currently holds and Chair of leading WA gold miner Northern Star, a position he still currently holds.
In this wide ranging conversation, Michael reflects on his upbringing, family, education, employment pathway, business decisions and his decorated corporate career providing some captivating insights into his life and what has shaped him. Australia has many great fund managers but only a few have achieved the respect and success over such a long period of time as Mr Peter Cooper, the founder of Cooper Investors based in Melbourne. Whilst he won’t acknowledge it himself and shies away from this type of recognition, Peter has been referred to as an investment legend and a titan of Australian Funds Management. We have such an awesome opportunity to spend some time in conversation with a true leader in their field - Life Sciences, Technology and Data Strategy, Commercialisation and Innovation specialist Dr Liz Dallimore, the inaugural CEO of Argenica Therapeutics, stock code AGN. Argenica Therapeutics is a biotechnology company developing novel therapeutics to reduce brain tissue death after stroke.
Liz grew up with science as part of her life. Her father achieved a PhD in nuclear physics from Oxford University and her love of science grew from an early stage. She then went on to graduate from the University of WA and Oxford University with a PhD in Nueroscience. In this podcast Liz speaks openly, drawing from her more than 20 years of experience and her deep understanding and highly educated insights. This results in a seriously thought provoking discussion into the human brain, the effect of stroke on the human brain, and the business side of the life sciences and Australian biotechnology sector – a sector which she is very passionate about.
Liz is also a mother of three kids who during her career was awarded winner of the 2019 Women in Technology WA Tech + Awards, was featured in the Sunday Times STM Magazine for International Women’s Day 2020 as one of three WA Women making a difference and was selected as 1 of 25 Australian Female Leaders in the STEM for 2022 Federal Government Women in Leadership Development Program as well as Co-Founding a Medical Device Start Up Company and being the inaugural CEO of an ASX listed Biotech Company. She has numerous Board and Advisory roles including a Non-Executive Director role with the National Energy Resources Australia organisation, a General Council role with the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and with the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, being part of the Research Investment Advisory Panel.

In this episode, we really are fortunate and grateful to be able to share some time with a real leader in his field. Mr David Southam is the Managing Director of Mincor Resources, an ASX listed nickel sulphide development company within the well known nickel belt region of Kambalda in the goldfields of WA.
David has had a phenomenal career. He grew up in New Zealand and this podcast reveals an absorbing journey that included his family moving to Western Australia, developing a passion for - and learning the ins and outs - of running a wide range of businesses to achieving career goals and enduring setbacks along the way. David delivers a very transparent view of his life growing up, his charitable nature, and navigating life’s challenges and opportunities that presented themselves along the way to where he is today.
In his current role he expands on the importance of team, the importance of nickel in today’s world and growing a business from a market capitalisation of some $70m when he started back in February 2019 to greater than $1bln where it is today.

Welcome to our 10th episode of “Finding the Front”!
In this episode we have a wonderful opportunity to meet and learn about one of Australia’s most experienced Pharmaceutical and Biotech CEOs and entrepreneurs, Mr Peter Molloy. Peter is the founder and executive chairman of Firebrick Pharma, stock code FRE, a company that has developed a breakthrough nasal spray medicine that targets the viral cause of the common cold.
Peter has an unbelievable background in this Pharmaceutical and Biotech sector and provides us a thought provoking understanding of what it has taken to become a leader in this field.
He is a qualified microbiologist and biochemist who built a who built a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry, initially at Faulding (Aust) where as a microbiologist and marketer he was integral in the launch of the Betadine Sore Throat Gargle which been an incredible success, and then at Pharmacia, later to become Pfizer, where he was Managing Director of Australia/NZ operations and later International Vice President for Strategic Marketing.
During his career, Peter launched some 23 new pharmaceutical products and executed no less than 40 international licensing or distribution deals. Subsequently, he was CEO of four biotech companies in US and Australia, including two ASX-listed firms.
As CEO of antiviral drug development company, Biota Holdings Limited (2002-2005), the company’s market value grew from $30m to around $300m. Subsequently, as founding CEO of Race Oncology (2016-2020), the company's market value grew from $12m to more than $400m during 2021.
In this broad ranging conversation Peter also provides his seriously informed insights into the Australian Biotech sector and the industry as a whole.

Chris started in the mining industry in 1990 and co-founded Reed Resources with his father David in 2001. In this absorbing conversation we gain an understanding of Chris’s life growing up in the capital of the Western Australian goldfields, Kalgoorlie and how his career path and passion led to building a company in the mining sector, developing an understanding of the commodities that are very relevant to the 21st century and ultimately, the formation of Neometals.
Neometals has transitioned from a mineral resource only exposure to becoming an integrated mineral and materials project developer. It has 3 core projects with large partners that support the global transition to clean energy and span the battery value chain including Lithium ion battery recycling, vanadium recovery and the Barrambie Titanium and Vanadium project which is one the world’s highest grade hard rock titanium vanadium deposits.

In Episode 8 of Finding the Front we are very privileged to have on the show the Managing Director and CEO of Pilbara Minerals, Mr Ken Brinsden. Ken joined Pilbara Minerals, stock code PLS, in 2016 as CEO when the company was a start-up lithium explorer.
Last week after some 7 years at the company, which is now grown to be a leading ASX 100 battery raw materials company, he made a difficult decision and announced his intention to step down from the Managing Director and CEO role by the end of 2022.
